Here is the 2017 Fonda Fair 4-H Exhibitor’s Handbook.There are a number of changes this year. Please check your class numbers & descriptions, some have changed from previous years. Double entry cards will be handed out when your entry form is submitted. All animal and non-animal entries are due: postmarked by July 28th, delivered to the 4-H office August 1st by 4pm. Faxed or emailed entries must be received by August 1st by 4pm. If you have any questions, please give us a call.

Young Farmers & Ranchers
Award Applications Are Available! The New York Farm Bureau State Young Farmers & Ranchers Program is excited to announce the 2017 Young Farmers & Ranchers Awards: Achievement and Excellence in Agriculture. These competitive events allow young farmers to be recognized for their involvement, achievement & leadership in agriculture, Farm Bureau, and their community as well as their understanding of agricultural issues.
Young Farmers applying for the Achievement Award or the Excellence in Agriculture Award must submit their applications to NYFB by September 1, 2017. These contests are for farmers who are 18-35 years old as of 1/31/18. For eligibility requirements and applications visit the Young Farmers & Ranchers page on the New York Farm Bureau website or contact NYFB at 1-800-342-4143.

WATERTOWN, N.Y. — The 2017 Dairyland Festival and Parade will be held Friday, June 2nd at the Dulles State Office Building in Watertown, NY. This year’s theme is “Agriculture MOOOOVING America” and will highlight the diversity of the dairy industry! The festival will be from 9 am – 2 pm for preschool and elementary age students with samples of dairy products, demonstrations and activities, petting zoo and agricultural technology. Following the festival, a 6 pm performance by Showstoppers Dance Team at the state office building will kick off the evening program. The Dairyland Parade will begin at 7 pm at Watertown High School and travel down Washington Street ending at the Dulles State Office Building where the Jefferson County Dairy Princess Court will be serving a Giant Ice Cream Sundae to all who attend. Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Mary Ann Charon will teach you how to create your own decorative herb container garden during this hands-on workshop. This class will be held at the Montgomery County Annex Building, 20 Park St, Room 111, Fonda NY.
Are you interested in gardening but your space is limited? Try growing plants in containers. This class will demonstrate how you can grow herbs & annuals in containers. Participants will learn how to choose your container and plants, design the container and maintain a mini-garden throughout the season. Each participant will plant a container garden of their own to take home. All materials will be supplied.
Cost is $15 per person, please pay in the office to hold your spot

Given the forecast for this evening and early school closings, we have decided to cancel the 4-H Volunteer Meeting scheduled for this evening at 6:30pm. We have decided to include the agenda for your information and have not decided on a date or time to reschedule the volunteer meeting. Pie sale forms will be available at the 4-H Office for pick-up starting tomorrow 1/18/2017. Individual members will have their pie sale information and forms sent by mail. If you have any questions please contact the 4-H office.

We hope you and your four-legged friends are staying warm in these cold temperatures! Just a reminder during this recent cold spell to make sure your horse is staying happy and warm! (Courtesy of Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital)
- Make sure the horse has access to fresh, unfrozen water
- Keep hay in front of horses, as the fermentation in the large colon will keep them warmer than feeding grain, which is digested quickly in the small intestine. (Unless of course the horse is Metabolic or has another health reason to not have ad lib hay)
- Provide a salt block as this will encourage more drinking
- Provide a shelter as a wind break or so horses can get out of cold rain. If their winter coat is adequate, they do not necessarily need a blanket unless it is precipitating outside.
Unless there is ice in the paddock, cold, dry temperatures alone are not a reason to keep a horse inside all day.
