View from the Road – CLRP Staff

December 2018

December is a busy month for all of us. We rush around shopping for gifts, venturing out to parties, and hectically traveling from one place to the next. When the dust settles and we arrive safely at our destinations, we embrace the opportunity to slow down, relax, and enjoy the company of close family and friends.

At CLRP, we believe it is important to think about you and your co-workers at this time of year because you are the actual people who build and maintain our roads and bridges. After all, it’s the work that you do that allows us to rush around during the chaos of the holiday season. You are out there, every day making the roads safe for the rest of us.

Without understanding the dangers that exist in a work zone it’s easy for rushed drivers to become frustrated when they are stopped by a flagger or forced to reduce their speed. From 2011 to 2015, 609 workers were killed from injuries at road work zones in the United States and 46 percent of these workers were killed in pedestrian vehicular incidents.

Motorists can become impatient when they are behind a snow plow or get angry when they have to clean salt off of their cars. It’s easy to forget that plow drivers leave their homes and brave dangerous conditions to help ensure we all get to where we need to go safely.

During storms, blizzards, and floods the tireless men and women who work the roads are out there for all of us. Highway workers are often the first to arrive at the scene of an accident or emergency and the last to leave. They venture out into the cold when they get the call, holiday or not, for all of us.

When we finally slow down this December to enjoy the company of friends and family, let’s take a moment to pause and reflect on the superintendents and crews who are responsible for our roads because it’s so easy to forget that they are out there, day and night, for all of us. From all of us at the Cornell Local Roads Program we wish you a happy, and safe December.
