Regional Teams Invaluable to Local Farmers

Cooperative Extension regional agriculture programs are the result of unique partnerships that provide opportunities to commercial producers beyond their individual counties’ borders. These ag teams present educational programs on a wide variety of topics, consult with commercial farmers and producers in a timely manner on specific technical issues, provide on-site visits when necessary and provide assitance to beginning farmers in addition to those making production changes.

Find team members, their specific areas of expertise, and contact information on the download below.

2010 Central New York Dairy Day Coming Up in Cooperstown
Posted 2/5/2010 by Karen Kosinski

Come to the Otesaga Resort Hotel, 60 Lake Street in Cooperstown on Tuesday, March 9th from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. for the 2010 Dairy Day.

Dr. Thomas R. Overton, from the Department of Animal Science at Cornell University will give the Keynote address about key nutritional and herd management factors affecting transition cow success. Dr. Overton’s research focus has been to increase out understanding of the metabolic changes that occur in dairy cows as they “transition” from late pregnancy to early lactation and develop ways to translate this knowledge into improved cow health and productivity on the farm. This timeframe is generally considered to be the most critical of the lactation cycle of diary cows because of increased risk for health disorders and because overall well-being of cows during the period largely determines subsequent productive and reproductive performance during lactation.

After lunch Dr. Overton will speak about customizing transition cow management within your farm. A. Fay Benson, Cornell Cooperative Extension Small Farms Educator, will present “The organic milk market: what is going on with consumer demand and prices and how is it affecting producers? A presentation by Jim Dunn, Professor of Agricultural Economics, Penn State University, will focus on What is the outlook for exports, domestic consumption and national milk production? And What can we expect for milk prices for the rest of 2010 and for 2011?

A trade show will open at 10:00 a.m. and run through lunch.

This program qualifies for two PAS Continuing Education Credits from the ARPAS office in Illinois.

Registration is $25 per person, which includes lunch, and is required no later than noon on Friday, March 5.
