Regional Teams Invaluable to Local Farmers

Cooperative Extension regional agriculture programs are the result of unique partnerships that provide opportunities to commercial producers beyond their individual counties’ borders. These ag teams present educational programs on a wide variety of topics, consult with commercial farmers and producers in a timely manner on specific technical issues, provide on-site visits when necessary and provide assitance to beginning farmers in addition to those making production changes.

Find team members, their specific areas of expertise, and contact information on the download below.

Mohawk Valley Produce Auction Grower’s Meeting Scheduled for December 14th
Posted 11/16/2010 by Crystal Stewart

Vegetable growers: it’s not too early to start thinking about the 2012 growing season!

Cornell University Cooperative Extension Capital District Vegetable and Small Fruit Program presents the second annual grower’s meeting for the Mohawk Valley Produce Auction on December 14th, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Canajoharie Fire House in Montgomery County. All vegetable growers are welcomed to attend this meeting, which will feature a presentation on challenges from the 2010 growing season; a disease update for pumpkins including information on powdery and downy mildew; a presentation on growing day-neutral strawberries in New York; a presentation on high tunnel and season-extending  vegetable production; and information about post-harvest care of vegetables to maintain quality during shipping and storage. If you have been selling or buying at the auction, this is a great opportunity to meet fellow growers, ask technical questions, and provide feedback for next year. If you aren’t an auction grower, this meeting will still provide excellent information about the latest pest and disease controls, the best new vegetable and strawberry varieties, and will be a chance to learn more about the auction.

Admission to the meeting is free, but lunch will cost $5. There will be 2.75 DEC Pesticide credits available in categories 1a, 10, and 23. For more information on the meeting, please contact Crystal Stewart at 518.775.0018 or at cls263@cornell.edu.

WHAT: MVPA Grower’s meeting

WHEN: December 14, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WHERE: Canajoharie Fire House, 75 Erie Blvd., Canajoharie NY.
