4-H Youth Development
Youth Sharpen Public Speaking Skills at 4-H Public Presentation Night
Posted 3/25/2011 by Shannon Dygert

This month, over 40 4-H youth from Fulton and Montgomery Counties participated in one of 4-H’s most important and popular events of the year. On March 11, 4-H Public Presentation Night was held at the Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery BOCES campus.

Youth selected from among four categories of presentations: Demonstrations, Illustrated Talks, Formal Speeches and Creative Communications. 4-Hers shared information about a wide variety of topics including “Horse Soccer”, “American Military Spy Aircraft”, “Chocolate Pudding Pie with a Twist”, “Silage Fermentation” and “Lego’s”.  4-H youth did an exceptional job with their public speaking and were encouraged to repeat their presentations at the 2011 Fonda Fair.

Volunteers were critical to the event’s success and the 4-H Youth Development Program in Fulton and Montgomery Counties was most appreciative for their help.

Volunteer presentation evaluators were Gloria Bruno, Melanie Gessinger and Mike Settle. Teen assistants were Marybeth Allen, Sean Craig, Meghan Herrick, Michael Johnson, Kayla Roberson and Kristen Rulison.  Invaluable assistance was also provided by Barb Allen, Beth Claes, Bill Claes, Theresa Craig, Marsha Douglass, Tamera Healy, Candy-Jo Herrick, Jamie Herrick, Sheryl Johnson and Gretchen Roberson.

On the same evening 4-H Cloverbuds, age 5 to 8, gave shorter presentations in front of a "Happy Listener."

These younger 4-H members were not evaluated nor scored, but received encouraging comments and tips for improvement. The topics of the Cloverbud presentations included “Mini Pizzas”, “Magical Math Numbers”, “How to Take Care of a Stuffed Animal”, “The Pledge of Allegiance Recitation”, and “Scooby-Doo Song”.

Volunteer evaluators marked 4-H members, age 8 to 19, on appearance, poise, voice presentation and understanding of subject matter. Additionally, points were earned for creative introduction, use of equipment, charts and models, presentation technique, grammar and vocabulary, organization and concise summary. Evaluation was done by the Danish system of judging against a standard. Each presenter earned a blue, red or white ribbon award.

4-H members who gave presentations this year were: Quinten Abraham, Lindsay Achzet, Marybeth Allen, Alicia Anich, Sierra Berger, Haley Claes, Schuyler Claes, Elizabeth Cortese, Jacob Cressy, Jesse Cressy, John Cressy, Levi Cressy, Jaquin Williams, Katie Gray, Michael Johnson, Philip Johnson, Katie Joyce, Michelle Joyce, Jennifer Keehan, Rayna Lindsey, Laura Littrell, Ben Littrell, Beth Mallet, Amber Morey, Jennifer Keehan, Alexis Nellis, Audrey Nellis, Kaitlyn Price, Brianna Quakenbush, Courtney Quakenbush, Ethen Robbins, Rachel Rochet, Alexander Rowe, Isaiah Rulison, Kristen Rulison, Bretton Scofield, Jamie Tilt, and Brent Wagoner.
