Eat Smart New York!

Trained Nutrition Program Educators work with individuals and groups to determine needs and goals. Sessions are conducted at homes, community centers, work sites, or other convenient locations.
Eat Smart New York! participants learn to:

  • Plan thrifty menus
  • Stretch food dollars
  • Read food labels
  • Budget households finances
  • Use the Food Guide Pyramid
  • Plan nutritious meals for pregnant moms, infants, and children
  • Meet the nutritional need of seniors
  • Control weight for optimal health
  • Exercise safely at any age
  • Prepare healthy meals in a flash
  • Serve healthy snacks for kids
  • Cook for one or two
  • Cook from scratch
  • Use leftovers creatively
  • Store and prepare food safely
  • Grow a vegetable garden
  • Preserve food by canning or freezing

Why make referrals to Eat Smart New York! of Fulton and Montgomery Counties?

Provides income-eligible individuals the opportunity to receive lessons at no charge, conducted by a trained nutrition program educator

Lessons are individualized and provided in the participant’s own home or to groups in a
community setting; flexible times can be arranged.

Lessons are provided weekly or bi-weekly, ranging form a one-time visit to visits spaced over a year.

Participants become enabled to make informed choices and decisions, which will support optimal
nutritional health, optimal physical health, optimal mental health and an optimal feeling of well being through maximization of all resources.

Who is eligible for this FREE Nutrition Program?

Individuals or families receiving Food Stamps, WIC, Medicaid, or who those who have applied for Food Stamps; families whose children are enrolled in Head Start.

What types of skill-enhancing topics are taught?

Meal planning, food habits and buying, understanding labels

Stretching food dollars and food stamps

Food storage and safety

Serving Sizes

Child nutrition

Budgeting

Food Guide Pyramid

Dietary Guidelines for Americans

Following a recipe

Prenatal and infant nutrition

How to refer someone to the CCE’s Eat Smart Program:

1. Complete this referral form and return by mail to Cornell Cooperative Extension of Fulton and
Montgomery Counties (address on reverse side) - or -
2. Send fax to Cornell Cooperative Extension at 518-762-8155

3. Call CCE at 518-762-3909 and ask to make a referral to the nutrition education program.
