Waterhemp is a pigweed species you have likely been hearing about as a problem weed in the Midwest as populations have been found that are resistant to not only glyphosate but a number of other modes of action. It has since been found in NY & in the last year was found in a few fields in Oneida & Herkimer Counties. You likely heard discussion of this weed at winter meetings this year. A meeting organized by Jeff Miller of CCE Oneida County will be held July 24, 1 to 2:30 pm at the VanHatten Farm, 7810 Putnam Road, Barneveld, NY
Jeff has worked with Bryan Brown of the NY State IPM program to put out a herbicide trial with 12 different treatments to assess what herbicides might work effectively against this weed in our area.

Livestock Techniques Hands-on Workshop ~ 3 locations to choose from - Come join Ashley McFarland, Area Livestock Specialist with the Central New York Dairy, Livestock & Field Crops Team, for a hands-on workshop focusing on management practices for livestock. She will be teaching participants the proper ways to administer vaccinations, ear tagging, ear notching, castration and proper restraint and safety while working with animals.

This program is designed to assist producers in determining fair rental rates on their farms from collected data in surrounding farms/counties. In addition to land rental rates, from determining fair land sale values on farms will be touched upon. The National Young Farmers Coalition (NYFC) is offering an FDA approved, 2-day training on Produce Safety Rules (PSR) to be held in Otsego County this spring. The training will cover Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) requirements for growers. NYFC is subsidizing the cost of the workshop, which will be approximately $40 per person, which includes lunch, a certificate of completion, and a binder of materials.

Y., February 8, 2019 – The Wildlife Management Institute, in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Audubon New York, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Quality Deer Management Association, and the Ruffed Grouse Society, is offering an additional opportunity for producers in New York State to apply for financial assistance to address insufficient young forest habitat for targeted wildlife species.
