Cooperative Extension regional agriculture programs are the result of unique partnerships that provide opportunities to commercial producers beyond their individual counties’ borders. These ag teams present educational programs on a wide variety of topics, consult with commercial farmers and producers in a timely manner on specific technical issues, provide on-site visits when necessary and provide assitance to beginning farmers in addition to those making production changes.

Announcing the Application Cutoff of Date March 15, 2019 for the Young Forest Initiative to Benefit Native Wildlife in New York
Fultonville, N. Y., February 8, 2019 – The Wildlife Management Institute, in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Audubon New York, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Quality Deer Management Association, and the Ruffed Grouse Society, is offering an additional opportunity for producers in New York State to apply for financial assistance to address insufficient young forest habitat for targeted wildlife species.

Spotted Lanternfly Basics: Webinar Announcement A new webinar series is being developed to provide information on spotted lanternfly, an invasive pest that has been found to feed on 70 species of plants in both the agricultural and urban segments of the northeastern United States. The spotted lanternfly is an excellent hitchhiker and moves primarily through human movement, giving it the potential to show up anywhere in the United States. It is important to know how to properly identify this pest and report its sighting. Each webinar will be one hour in length and cover:

NYS announced $1 million for the 5th round of the New Farmers Grant Fund. The Grants will help beginning farmers improve profitability through one or both of specific goals.
Grants may provide a minium of $15,000 and a maximum of $50,000 for up to 50% of total projecet costs.

We welcome Nicole Tommell as the agricultural business management specialist on the Central New York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops team. Nicole will provide leadership for planning and developing programing that emphasizes business management and profitability. Thanks to the CCE associations in the region and Cornell for expanding our team’s capacity to meet the educational needs of the ag industry in Chenango, Fulton, Herkimer, Madison, Montgomery, Otsego, Saratoga and Schoharie Counties.
Nicole received her Bachelor of Technology degree from SUNY Cobleskill in Agricultural Business. She also holds a Masters in Agricultural Education from North Carolina State University. Before joining the team, Nicole was a Visiting Instructor at SUNY Cobleskill teaching courses ranging from agricultural business to animal science. She has also managed a diversified cattle operation she owns with her husband.
Her primary goal will be to provide business analysis, planning and development support for agricultural businesses in the region. Please welcome Nicole to the team.

ALBANY — The recently adopted 2018-19 New York State budget offers good news for a new generation of farmers looking for farmland in New York. The budget includes funding to create the “Farmland for a New Generation Program,” which will help aspiring farmers find land to farm anywhere in the state.

Earlier spring crops, double yields, and the potential for $1390 in added net revenue are among the results noted in the 2017 vegetable production research report posted at www.nnyagdev.org by the farmer-driven Northern New York Agricultural Development Program.
